Postdoc in Psychology (ERC project ‘HOMEOSTASIS: The dynamics of visual working memory’) (1.0 FTE)

JOB DESCRIPTION
There is an opening for a three-years postdoc to work on the dynamics of visual working memory at Utrecht University. The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Attention-lab of Stefan van der Stigchel, principal investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator project HOMEOSTASIS and Professor in Cognitive Psychology at Utrecht University.

The HOMEOSTASIS project is motivated by the idea that visual working (VWM) should be studied in interaction with the world that is still within view. The known limitation of VWM might not be a problem in daily life, because the external world typically remains available and can be accessed relatively easily. It’s currently unknown how the brain balances between internal storage and external sampling of the world.

HOMEOSTASIS will develop a new theoretical model of WM based on an internal mental economy in which VWM maintains a perceptual homeostasis by dynamically trading the costs of accurate internal storage against external sampling of the external visual world.

For one of the work packages, we are looking for a post-doc with a background in EEG recordings and decoding. Using EEG, we will investigate whether the internalized features are determined by the outcome of the trade-off between internal storage and external sampling. You will become a part of our Attention-lab in which a group of post-docs and Phd students are working on the same project.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for a three-year position. During the three years, you will be responsible for managing the piloting, designing and analysis of EEG experiments on visual working memory. You will also co-supervise a PhD student working on related topics. In addition to individual work, you will contribute to regular project team meetings, joint conference presentations and academic publications.

REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for a Postdoc who is highly skilled in a range of quantitative methods, such a decoding psychophysics and statistical modeling. We expect a high degree of independence and responsibility from you. Because you will work in a larger research project, good teamwork and communication are also essential.

Furthermore, we are looking for a candidate who:

  • holds a doctoral degree in the cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology or a related discipline;
  • has a track record appropriate to the stage of their career, and an obvious curiosity and enthusiasm for academic research;
  • is capable of conducting original research independently as well as working in a team;
  • is a strong conceptual thinker;
  • has excellent English writing skills;
  • has experience with Matlab or Python for experimental control and Matlab, Python, or R for data analysis is required at the postdoc level.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
We offer a full-time (1.0 FTE) contract as a Postdoctoral Researcher for three years. The first year will be a probationary period; following a positive assessment in the first year, the position will be extended. The gross salary ranges between €2,709 and €4,274 (depending on experience, scale 10 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month based on a full-time employment.

Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
