We announce an early stage researcher (PhD student) position in the project Importance of genetic diversity in the fisheries management of brown trout stocks, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The research project is conducted collaboratively between the University of Eastern Finland, the Kainuu Fisheries Research Station of the Natural Resources Institute Finland, the University of Oulu and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The aim of the project is to understand factors that determine migration behaviour, growth and fitness of brown trout in various environments, and to use this knowledge to manage contemporary evolution to maintain the genetic integrity and diversity of brown trout populations. We are searching for an early stage researcher to develop genetic research and help with the experimental work during summer 2019.

Early stage researcher will pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme in Environmental Physics, Health and Biology (EPHB). For an early stage researcher we offer an opportunity to work in a competitive, dynamic and international team and the research theme, which is strategically identified by the University of Eastern Finland.

We appreciate highly motivated, mobile candidates who demonstrate good command of scientific writing and share a passionate interest in research in conservation genetics and its applications in fisheries. We expect the chosen candidate to have studies in genetics and knowledge of programming or standard analyses in population genetics. Experience in working with fish is not necessary but will be seen as an advantage.

We expect the chosen candidate to be able to communicate with local people and help in the writing of an instructions leaflet for the local fisheries stakeholders to guide in the management of brown trout populations. Knowledge of the Finnish language is thus helpful but not compulsory.

The early stage researchers main work location is Joensuu.
